Spud Definition / Meaning
Spud is the moment drilling of a new well begins — the point at which the drill bit first turns on bottom to make hole. The verb is to spud in, and the spud date is the calendar date on which that happened. Everything that follows in the life of the well, from days-versus-depth curves to lease obligations to regulatory filings, is measured from it.
The word is old. Early cable-tool rigs started a hole with a heavy, blunt spudding bit that was repeatedly lifted and dropped to break the surface ground, and the name for that first work stayed attached to the start of every well even after rotary drilling replaced the method.
What Happens Before the Spud
By the time the bit turns, most of the preparatory work is already done. The location has been surveyed and permitted, the pad or platform built, and a cellar dug below where the wellhead will sit. A short, large-diameter conductor casing has usually been driven or drilled and cemented to keep loose surface soil from caving into the hole and to give drilling returns a path back to the pits. The rig is then moved in, raised, and accepted, and the drilling mud system is charged with a simple, viscous spud mud designed to clean a big hole through unconsolidated ground.
Whether the conductor installation itself counts as the spud depends on who is asking, which is why the term needs a definition every time it is used in a contract.

Spud-to-Spud and Drilling Performance
Because the spud is unambiguous once defined, it anchors the metrics operators use to compare rigs, crews and well designs. Spud to total depth measures how quickly the hole was made. Spud to rig release adds the time to run and cement the final casing string and hand the well over for completion. Spud-to-spud captures the whole rig cycle including the move, and it is the number that pad drilling programs try to drive down, because a rig that walks from slot to slot on a pad can spud its next well in days rather than weeks.
The days-versus-depth plot, which every drilling engineer reads before any other report, is simply time since spud on one axis and measured depth on the other. Flat stretches on it are the story of the well: casing runs, cement waits, kicks, lost circulation, stuck pipe.
Spud Mud and the Surface Hole
The first hole section is drilled with spud mud, a bentonite-and-water fluid mixed thick enough to carry large cuttings out of a large-diameter hole at modest pump rates and to support soft, unconsolidated formations. It is deliberately simple; there is no need for the inhibitive or weighted systems used deeper. The circulating system and the shale shakers handle a heavy load of gravel and sand in this section, and returns are often diverted rather than contained, because no blowout preventer is installed until surface casing is set and cemented.

Why the Spud Date Matters
A spud date is a legal fact as much as an operational one. It can hold a lease that would otherwise expire, it starts the clock on reporting obligations that vary by jurisdiction, and it is the field that regulators, analysts and investors count when they want a leading indicator of activity: a rising spud count precedes a rise in production by months. On the rig itself the spud is the last moment of planning and the first moment of consequence, which is why the drilling program, the rig acceptance checks and the well control equipment tests are all signed off before the bit ever touches bottom.
