Conductor Casing Definition / Meaning
Conductor casing, also called conductor pipe, is the first, largest-diameter and shortest string of pipe installed in a well. It is set through the loose, unconsolidated ground near the surface, typically to somewhere between a few tens and a few hundred feet, before any other drilling is done. Its job is structural and practical rather than pressure-containing: it keeps the top of the hole from washing out or caving in, gives the drilling mud a closed path back to the surface, and in many designs carries part of the weight of the wellhead and the strings hung from it.
Everything about the rest of the well is sized backwards from the conductor. Because each later casing string must pass inside the previous one, the conductor’s diameter sets the ceiling for the whole casing program.
What the Conductor Does
- Prevents washout: without a conductor, circulating mud through gravel, sand or soft clay erodes a crater around the hole and the rig’s foundations.
- Returns path: it is the first pipe that lets mud and cuttings return to the pits rather than soak away into the ground.
- Structural support: onshore it helps support the wellhead; on platforms and jackups it carries the full weight of the casing strings and the wellhead through the water column to the seabed.
- Shallow isolation: it seals off shallow water sands and, offshore, gives a route to divert shallow gas away from the rig floor.

Conductor Versus Surface Casing
The two are easily confused because both are shallow and both are large. The difference is purpose. Surface casing is a pressure-containing string: it protects fresh-water aquifers, it is cemented to surface, and it is the string the blowout preventer is anchored to. Conductor casing is set before any of that is possible and is not designed to hold well pressure at all. Until the surface string is in and the BOP is nippled up, the only well control equipment on the conductor is a diverter, whose purpose is to send any shallow gas away from the rig floor rather than to shut the well in. Sizes reflect the difference: conductors commonly run from 20 to 36 inches in diameter, while surface casing is often 9-5/8 to 20 inches.
Design Considerations
Conductor design is dominated by loads that have little to do with reservoir pressure. Onshore the questions are soil bearing capacity, the axial load from the wellhead and suspended strings, and corrosion where the pipe passes through wet ground. Offshore the pipe is also a structural member exposed to wave and current bending, to fatigue at the seabed, and to corrosion in the splash zone, and it must be strong enough that the whole casing and wellhead system can hang from it. Depth is chosen to reach competent soil, to pass below the base of shallow water sands, and to satisfy any regulatory minimum.

Conductor in Abandonment
At the end of the well’s life the conductor is the last pipe to go. After the cement plugs are set and the wellhead is removed, the conductor and any casing inside it are cut off a specified distance below ground level or below the mudline and the stub is recovered, so nothing remains that could obstruct the surface or the seabed. The cut is part of the regulated plug and abandonment program, and offshore it can be a substantial operation in its own right.
