A kick is an unplanned influx of formation fluids (oil, gas, or water) into the wellbore during drilling, completion, workover, or production operations. It occurs when the pressure exerted by the drilling fluid column (hydrostatic pressure) is less than the pore pressure of the formation being penetrated. If not controlled promptly, a kick can escalate into a blowout, an uncontrolled release of fluids from the well. The term is central to well control principles and the practices that ensure safe operations.
Primary Causes of a Kick
Kicks are typically triggered by a loss of the primary well control barrier—the hydrostatic column of drilling mud. Common causes include:
- Underbalanced conditions: The mud weight is insufficient to overcome formation pore pressure. This can happen when drilling into a high-pressure zone unexpectedly or when mud density is reduced incorrectly.
- Swabbing: When the drill string is pulled upward too quickly, it creates a suction effect that reduces bottomhole pressure, pulling formation fluids into the wellbore.
- Lost circulation: If drilling mud escapes into fractured or highly permeable formations, the fluid level in the well drops, reducing hydrostatic head and allowing formation fluids to enter.
- Inadequate hole fill: During tripping operations, if the hole is not properly filled with mud, the fluid level declines and pressure balance is lost.
- Gas cut mud: Entrained gas expands as it rises, lightening the mud column and reducing hydrostatic pressure, potentially causing further influx.
Signs and Detection of a Kick

- Record stabilized pressures: Observe and record shut-in drill pipe pressure (SIDPP) and shut-in casing pressure (SICP). These values are used to determine the required kill mud weight.
- Circulate the kick out: Use a well-control method such as the Driller’s Method or the Wait and Weight Method. The Driller’s Method circulates the influx out with the original mud, then circulates in heavy kill mud. The Wait and Weight Method mixes kill mud first, then circulates it directly while displacing the kick.
- Weight up the mud system: Increase the drilling fluid density to provide sufficient hydrostatic pressure to control the formation.
All well control operations follow strict procedures outlined by industry standards (e.g., API RP 53, IADC guidelines).
Prevention and Training
Preventing kicks relies on maintaining an adequate primary barrier—the mud column. Best practices include:
- Accurate pore pressure prediction using seismic and offset well data.
- Maintaining proper mud weight and rheology.
- Controlling tripping speeds to avoid swabbing and surging.
- Using mud caps or well control checklists during operations.
- Regular well control drills and certification (e.g., IWCF, WellCAP).
Usage Example: While drilling the 12-1/4″ section at 9,500 ft, the mud logger noted a 10-bbl pit gain and a 5% flow increase. The driller immediately shut in the well, recorded a SIDPP of 400 psi, and initiated the Driller’s Method to circulate out the gas kick. After weighting up to 12.3 ppg, normal drilling resumed.

A kick is a manageable event if detected early. The term is distinct from a blowout, which is an uncontrolled flow.
