BOPs serve as the last line of defense in well control and are required by regulations worldwide. When activated, the BOP can close around the drill pipe, shear the pipe entirely, or seal the open hole, depending on the design and the situation.
How a Blowout Preventer Works
A BOP system, often called a BOP stack, is mounted on the wellhead below the drilling floor. During normal drilling, the BOP remains open so that the drill string, casing, and tools can pass through. If a kick (an influx of formation fluids into the wellbore) is detected, the driller can close the appropriate rams or annular element to seal the well. Most countries mandate compliance with standards such as API (American Petroleum Institute), ISO 13628, and NORSOK (for North Sea operations). Regulations often require at least two independent barriers (e.g., a pipe ram and an annular BOP) in the stack. After the Deepwater Horizon incident, regulations worldwide tightened, requiring more rigorous testing and remote-operated acoustic control systems.
